What are Personal Learning Networks?

The term personal learning network (PLN) refers to a learner's collection of collaborative platforms and online networks are used for professional development and continued learning. The rise of social media has played a huge role in establishing the need for a PLNs, as life-long learners discover how to leverage their social networks for more than just socializing. In these informal learning situations, people make connections and follow each other with the intention of gleaning insights and resources through their interactions. The concept of a PLN has its roots in the theory of connectivism, which was developed by George Siemens and Stephen Downes to describe the educational experience of people learning from each other via the Web without ever meeting in person. Building a PLN requires proactive interaction with others online through Facebook, Twitter, and other social platforms such as blogs and read-share websites. MOOC discussion forums are also ideal places to connect with others with relevant interests and experiences.
